Bulugala forest monastery is situated in Passara Wellawaya area in Sri Lanka. This cave temple claims to be founded by King Walagamba. Historical caves or rock shelters and the rock pond in Bulugala Monastery are considered as evidence for this claim.
These rock caves have a carved gutter (Kataram) just above the entrance for drainage of rainwater. According to the villagers, water in the rock pond does not run dry.
It is believed that arahants (one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved Nibbana) had lived in this area in the past. This area has been abandoned for several years. Six years ago, this area had been developed as a forest monastery. There are about 36 monks living in this forest monastery and this number can vary.
Cooking facilities and lodging rooms are available for devotees who want to stay overnight in the monastery to prepare lunch (Dahawal Daana) and offer to monks.
